The Kelwa Legacy
The Fateh Collection's private museum at Fateh Vilas houses one of the most distinguished collections of vintage and classic vehicles in Rajasthan. Assembled over generations, it reflects the family's long engagement with the history of the automobile—from rare pre-independence motorcars that graced the courts of maharajas, to military vehicles, two-wheelers, and heritage animal-drawn carriages, each carrying its own provenance and story.
The museum is as much a portrait of an era as it is a vehicle collection—a material record of the world that shaped Mewar in the twentieth century. Several of these cars still leave the museum: they carry guests on curated drives through the countryside, arrive at private dinners above the lakes, and lead wedding processions through Udaipur.
Twenty-four motorcars spanning six decades and twelve marques—from a 1931 Cadillac roadster and a 1932 Standard Avon Special Sports to a 1967 Mustang convertible and a run of six Mercedes-Benz saloons.
Seven working vehicles built for terrain rather than boulevards—among them a wartime Ford Jeep, two generations of Land Rover, and a Studebaker amphibious personnel carrier. Several still take guests into the Aravallis.
Seven motorcycles tracing the century from pre-war Britain to India's own manufacturing era—a 1930s AJS and a wartime BSA alongside a Jawa, a Triumph Tiger Twin, and the Rajdoot made famous by Hindi cinema.
Two Lambrettas—the Italian scooter that became, for a generation of Indian families, the first vehicle of their own.
A folding bicycle designed to be dropped from an aircraft alongside the soldier who would ride it—one of the most quietly extraordinary objects in the collection.
Six vehicles from the era before the engine—a temple carriage, horse carriages for one and two, a camel cart, and two bullock carts of the kind that still work the fields around Bujara.
The farm side of the collection—a reminder that the estate has always been agricultural as well as ceremonial.
Two Marutis—the small car that put independent India on the road, and is now old enough to be collected.
