Lake Pichola Sunset from the Water or the Ghats
Sunset over Lake Pichola, when the palaces and hills catch the day’s last light.
At Lake Pichola, sunset brings the City Palace, island palaces, and Aravalli Hills into the same changing frame. From the water, the palaces catch the last light as their reflections stretch across the lake, while the hills behind turn darker by the minute. It is the most sought-after boat ride of the day, with the sunset service filling faster than the daytime excursion.
From the ghats, the view unfolds at a slower pace. Sit by the water and watch the light move across the palaces as boats pass between the shore and the islands. For more places to explore around the city, our guide to tourist attractions in Udaipur covers what lies beyond the lake.

4 Islands on Lake Pichola, from Jag Mandir to Arsi Vilas
Mohan Mandir, one of Lake Pichola’s four islands, once used to watch festivals on the water.
Most visitors know Jag Mandir and Jag Niwas, but Lake Pichola has 4 islands, each revealing a different side of Udaipur as you move across the water.
Jag Mandir: Dating to 1628, the island palace was built by 3 Maharajas of the Sisodia Rajputs of Mewar and later sheltered Prince Khurram, who became Emperor Shah Jahan, during a rebellion. The palace is also said to have influenced the Taj Mahal, offered refuge to European families in 1857, and appeared in the 1983 film Octopussy. Today, you can visit between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
Jag Niwas: Built by Maharana Jagat Singh II, this is the island that commands attention from the eastern shore, with its pale palace seeming to float on the lake.
Mohan Mandir: Once a royal vantage point for watching festivals on the water, the island gives you a sense of how closely the lake was woven into Udaipur’s ceremonial life.
Arsi Vilas: What began as an ammunition depot is now a bird sanctuary, offering a quieter stretch of the lake and a chance to see its landscape away from the grander palaces.
From the deck, the City Palace takes on a different presence too, its walls rising directly from the eastern shore and revealing how naturally the palace and lake belong to the same landscape.
